Retreats

On many accounts, silence was considered a precursor to having a deeper relationship with God. The Psalmist David the prophet and king said, “be still, and know that I am God” (Psalms 46:10, LXX). Elijah heard the voice of God “in a still small voice” (1 Kings 19:12). Through silence, one gains comfort from God for “behold, I will allure her, Will bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfort to her” (Hosea 2:14).

This silence must not only be external, but also internal for it is internal silence that grants mankind the ability to examine oneself – for perfection consists of righteousness and it is achieved through silence. Saint Isaac the Syrian believes that “silence is a mystery of the age to come, but words are instruments of this world.”
